הספר מתאר את הגעת הקדמה לארץ הקודש, בצורת מסילת ברזל באורך 86 ק"מ המחברת בין יפו וירושלים. טקס החניכה המרהיב של פתיחת המסילה התקיים בנוכחות נציגים של האימפריה הטורקית, שגרירים, מנהיגי דת ומשלחות מחו"ל. המסילות הגיעו לירושלים מכיוון דרום-מערב, כשהן חוצות את הרי יהודה, דרך קרקעיתו הפתלתלה והעמוקה של עמק סורק. המדרון התלול היווה אתגר של ממש בעבור הקרונות, למרות שנתיב זה היה בעל השיפוע הקטן ביותר. הקרונות יכלו לטפס במעלה הדרכים הטבעיות, עד לפסגה שגובהה כ-700 מטרים מעל פני הים.
מסילת הברזל הייתה המיזם ההנדסי הגדול ביותר בשטחה של ארץ הקודש בתקופה המודרנית. הסיבה לבנייתו הייתה ניסיון לניצול הצמיחה העצומה של תנועת הצליינים והתיירות לכאן בחצייה השני של המאה ה-19. מספר הצעות הועלו מאז אמצע המאה ה-19, אך רק בשנות ה-80 היו אלה יוסף נבון מירושלים ויוסף אמזלג מיפו, כשהם זוכים לתמיכה כלכלית מהבנקאי יוהנס פרוטיגר, שעשו את הצעדים הראשונים שהובילו לרכישת רישיון ממשלת טורקיה, והוא שהוביל להנחת מסילת הברזל. נבון לא הצליח לגייס מימון באירופה ומכר את הרישיון לאנשי עסקים קתוליים בפריס, והם שייסדו את "חברת מסילת הברזל העות'מאנית מיפו לירושלים'. למרות הקשיים, מסילת הברזל נפתחה והובילה לירושלים מספר גדול יותר של צליינים, ותרמה לצמיחתה של העיר. כמו כן, בתקופות בצורת, הביאה הרכבת לעיר את אספקת המים.
