The Hebrew Periodical Ha’Shiloah (1896–1919)

Its Role in the Development of Modern Hebrew Literature

תקציר

Ali Mohammed Abd El- Rahman Attia surveys the Hebrew periodical Ha-Shiloah in Europe during the years 1896-1919 and traces its impact on the development of Modern Hebrew literature. The work opens with a description of the Hebrew literature scene in Europe prior to the publication of Ha-Shiloah, and follows the fate of the periodical during its first period (1896-1902) under the editorship of Ahad Ha'Am. The author describes in detail Ahad Ha'Am’s editorial policy, the controversy with the "Young Writers" and financial and administrative problems facing the editor of the struggling journal. The period 1903-1919, during which Ha-Shiloah was edited by Joseph Klausner with Haim Nahman Bialik as co-editor, constitutes the second part of the work. A chapter is devoted to a comparison between Ha-Shiloah and Ha-Shahar, and the author concludes his study with a discussion on the contribution of the former to Hebrew journalism at the end of the nineteenth century.
