The selections in this volume, the fifteen prose poems of Griner akvarium (1953-54) and the eight entries in Meshiekes togbukh (1970-75) form a distinctive unit within Sutzkever's large poetic opus. Each of the narratives is a fragment of autobiography remembered and retold from a different perspective in space and time. The poet's lifeline has been severed by the holocaust and falls like a chasm between the past and the present. These works are an attempt to span the breach, creating in art an organic universe over which mutability and morality hold no sway.
