David Gillis’s highly original study of Maimonides’ Mishneh torah demonstrates that its form reflects a belief that observance of the divine commandments of the Torah brings the individual and society into line with the cosmic order. He shows that the Mishneh torah is intended to be an object of contemplation as well as a prescription for action, with the study of it in itself bringing the reader closer to knowledge of God. Gillis unpacks the metaphysical and cosmological underpinnings of Maimonides’ scheme of organization with consummate skill, allowing the reader to understand the Mishneh torah’s artistic dimension and to appreciate its power. Moreover, as he makes clear, uncovering this dimension casts new light on one of the great cruxes of Maimonides studies: the relationship of the Mishneh torah to his philosophical treatise The Guide of the Perplexed. A fundamental unity is revealed between Maimonides the codifier and Maimonides the philosopher that has not been fully appreciated hitherto. Maimonides’ artistry in composition is repeatedly shown to serve his aims in persuading us of the coherence and wisdom of the halakhic system. Gillis’s fine exegesis sets in high relief the humane and transcendental purposes and methods of halakhah as Maimonides conceived of it, in an argument that is sure-footed and convincing.

The Kingdom of Poland had the largest concentration Jews in eastern Europe and a liberal policy towards them that engendered cultural and political movements of all sorts. Hasidic courts flourished despite the opportunities of modernization, yet modernizing maskilim similarly established institutions that influenced Jewish society in a completely different direction. Later came integrationism, Zionism, Jewish socialism, and cultural autonomy. The resulting ferment was a critical factor in shaping the modern Jewish experience. The Kingdom of Poland, also known as the Congress Kingdom or Russian Poland, was created by a decision of the Congress of Vienna as part of its attempt to set up a post-Napoleonic European order. It incorporated lands that for many decades had been the most important centres of Polish politics, finance, education, and culture, and which also had the largest concentration of Jews in eastern Europe. Because of these factors, and because its semi-autonomous status allowed for the development of a liberal policy towards Jews quite different from that of Russia proper, the Kingdom of Poland became a fertile ground for the growth of Jewish cultural and political movements of all sorts, many of which continue to be influential to this day. This volume brings together a wide range of scholars to present a broad view of the Jewish life of this important area at a critical moment in its history. In the nineteenth century, tradition vied with modernization for Jews’ hearts and minds. In the Kingdom of Poland, traditional hasidic leaders defied the logic of modernization by creating courts near major urban centres such as Warsaw and Łódź and shtiblekh within them, producing innovative and influential homiletic literature and attracting new followers. Modernizing maskilim, for their part, found employment as government officials and took advantage of the liberal climate to establish educational institutions and periodicals that similarly attracted followers to their own cause and influenced the development of the Jewish community in the Kingdom in a completely different direction. Their immediate successors, the Jewish integrationists, managed to gain considerable power within the Jewish community and to create a vibrant and more secular Polish Jewish culture. Subsequently Zionism, Jewish socialism, and cultural autonomy also became significant forces. The relative strength of each movement on the eve of the rebirth of Poland is extremely difficult to measure, but unquestionably the ferment of so many potent, competing movements was a critical factor in shaping the modern Jewish experience.

הקובץ ההוויה הלאומית וההוויה האנושית מציג בפני קוראים בני הזמן הזה מבחר מאמרים ממרב שדות העיון, ההגות והניווט החברתי-מדיני של נתן רוטנשטרייך. המחבר היה קשוב תמיד לדופק הזמן מתוך מעורבות עמוקה ומתוך פרספקטיבה כפולה – זו של הזיכרון ההיסטורי וזו של חזון לעתיד. הוא הרבה לכתוב על סוגיות ערכיות, חינוכיות ופוליטיות. המאמרים שבקובץ מתייחסים לשינויים התרבותיים והמדיניים שעברו על החברה הישראלית והעם היהודי במשך שלושים שנה, חלקם בירורים עקרוניים וחלקם עוסקים בנושאים אקטואליים. במרכזן עומדת תפיסה מפוכחת של המציאות ותביעה מוסרית לפעול בתוכה. כלולות בקובץ גם רשימות זיכרון לאנשי תרבות ורוח. רוטנשטרייך הציב אמות מידה ערכיות להתמודדות עם מצוקות השעה ועם מבוכי הרוח של זמננו. אמות מידה אלה, שחצב וגם ליטש בהגותו ובביקורת החברתית שלו, מתבררות כבעלות אקטואליות חריפה, מעבר להקשרי כתיבתן וזמנן. פרופ' נתן רוטנשטרייך (1914–1993) נולד למשפחה ציונית בגליציה. הוא עלה ארצה ב-1932 בהיותו בן 18 והחל את לימודיו באוניברסיטה העברית. מאז שנת 1950 הוא לימד בחוג לפילוסופיה והדריך סטודנטים רבים. הוא כיהן כדיקן הפקולטה למדעי הרוח (1958–1962) וכרקטור האוניברסיטה (1965–1969), ונמנה עם מקימי האקדמיה הלאומית למדעים. רוטנשטרייך כתב 80 ספרים ופרסם יותר מ-1000 מאמרים בשפות שונות. יחד עם מורו וידידו, פרופ' שמואל הוגו ברגמן, תרגם את כתבי עמנואל קאנט לעברית. הוא הרבה לכתוב גם על סוגיות ערכיות, חינוכיות ופוליטיות. הוא זכה בפרס טשרניחובסקי לתרגומי מופת בשנת 1954, בפרס ישראל במדעי הרוח בשנת 1963 ובפרס ביאליק (לחכמת ישראל) בשנת 1992.

This masterly collection of essays offers a multifaceted analysis of how Jewish leaders in medieval and early modern times responded to the challenges they faced. Based largely on the study of sermons and responsa—genres that show Jewish leaders addressing real situations in the lives of their people—it reveals how rabbis have handled intellectual, social, and political diversity and conflict within various vibrant Jewish societies. As medieval Jews were exposed to new philosophical ideas, many began to question and challenge rabbinical leadership. Several of the essays explore the process by which these ideas became more accessible , the doubts that consequently arose regarding certain biblical and rabbinic texts, and the attempt by some leaders to ban the study of philosophical texts. Other essays address the rhetoric of rebuke with which preachers criticized behaviour within their community that they considered to be a violation of Jewish law and tradition. Another set of essays focuses on the challenges emerging from external forces, including the unification of France, the Spanish Inquisition and Edict of Expulsion, and the beginning of the Counter-Reformation. One essay explores and challenges the basis for criticism of the talent and leadership of rabbis in such times of crisis. A final section is devoted to conflicting attitudes towards the Holy Land, exile and diasporic existence, and messianic movements and personalities. These essays represent three decades of scholarship by a distinguished historian.
