Kabbalah, an esoteric lore whose study was traditionally restricted, played a surprisingly prominent and far-reaching role in eighteenth-century Prague. In this book Sharon Flatto uncovers the centrality of this mystical tradition for Prague’s influential Jewish community and its pre-eminent rabbinic authority, Ezekiel Landau, chief rabbi from 1754 to 1793. A towering eighteenth-century rabbinic leader who is best known for his halakhic responsa collection the Noda biyehudah, Landau is generally considered a staunch opponent of esoteric practices and public kabbalistic discourse. Flatto challenges this portrayal, exposing the importance of kabbalah in his work and thought and demonstrating his novel use of teachings from diverse kabbalistic schools. She also identifies the historical events and cultural forces underlying his reluctance to discuss kabbalah publicly, including the rise of the hasidic movement and the acculturation spurred by the 1781 Habsburg Toleranzpatent. In telling this story, the study offers the first systematic overview of the eighteenth-century Jewish community of Prague, and the first critical account of Landau’s life and writings, which continue to shape Jewish law and rabbinic thought to this day. Extensively examining Landau's rabbinic corpus, as well as a variety of archival and published German, Yiddish, and Hebrew sources, it provides a unique glimpse into the spiritual and psychological world of eighteenth-century Prague Jewry. Reconstructing the intellectual world and traditional society in which Landau lived, this study reveals the dominance of rabbinic culture in Prague during this transitional period, the ongoing significance of kabbalistic ideas and practices, and the city’s numerous distinguished figures and institutions. Its analysis of the spiritual trends that animated this culture demonstrates that Prague’s late eighteenth-century rabbinate was more influential, more conservative, and less open to modernization than has been recognized. Debunking the widespread scholarly portrayal of Prague as primarily under the influence of the modernizing West, Flatto shows that this key central European city was shaped more by traditional east European Jewish culture than by Western Enlightenment thought. By unraveling and exploring the many diverse threads that were woven into the fabric of Prague's eighteenth-century Jewish life, the book offers a comprehensive portrayal of rabbinic culture at its height in one of the largest and most important centres of European Jewry.

Kabbalistic Manuscripts and Textual Theory uncovers the unstated assumptions and expectations of scribes and scholars who fashioned editions from manuscripts of Jewish mystical literature. This study offers a theory of Kabbalistic textuality in which the material book – the printed page no less than handwritten manuscripts – serves as the site for textual dialogue between Jewish mystics of different periods and locations. The refashioning of the text through the process of reading and commenting that takes place on the page – in the margins and between the lines – blurs the boundaries between the traditionally defined roles of author, reader, commentator and editor. בחודש סיוון תשע"ג נתכנס ציבור נכבד בספרייה הלאומית בירושלים לציון מאה וחמישים שנה לייסוד מקיצי נרדמים. המאמרים הנדפסים בחוברת זו מבוססים על הדברים שנאמרו באותו ערב. חלקם באים כנתינתם בערב העיון, וחלקם נערכו ואף הורחבו מעט בידי הדוברים ונוספו בהם מראי מקום ואסמכתאות. חוברת זו ממוקדת בהערכה כוללת של מאה וחמישים שנות פעילותה של החברה, לעתים תוך חלוקתן לתקופות שונות ועיון בתופעות תרבותיות או מחקריות המשתקפות בפעילותה ובפרסומיה, ולעתים במבט כללי ומקיף. החוברת כוללת את רשימת הספרים שנדפסו על ידי מקיצי נרדמים, ואת שמות ראשי החברה לדורותיהם.

פתחי היכל: עיוני אגדה ומדרש בספר הזוהר בוחן את ספר היסוד של הקבלה כחיבור מדרשי. הספר מתמקד בסיפור המקראי המורחב שבזוהר, ובעיקר בזיקה שבין אגדת הזוהר לאגדה התלמודית-מדרשית הקדומה. בפני הקוראים נפתחים שנים עשר שערים של עיון בסוגיות האגדה שבספר הזוהר. נידונים נושאים כמו חטא אדם הראשון, עקדת יצחק, דמותו של עשו, מעמדו של אליהו הנביא, ועוד. בחינה ספרותית מדוקדקת של מסורות האגדה הללו לאור מקורותיהם העתיקים ומקבילות בנות הזמן, חושפת לראשונה - באופן שיטתי - רצף ושינוי בגלגוליה של האגדה העתיקה אל תוך הקורפוס הזוהרי ובתוכו. מבעד לגרסאות המתחדשות של הסיפורים העתיקים משתקפות מגמות מיסטיות, דילמות רוחניות ותודעה עצמית ייחודית ומפתיעה. \הספר הוא פרי מחקר רב שנים. חלק מפרקיו התפרסמו בבמות שונות וצורפו להם פרקים חדשים ומבוא מתודולוגי רחב, הסולל נתיבים להבנת דרכי הדרשה ולאפיון הטיפולוגי של אגדת הזוהר.

האם האמונה במלאכים נוצרה מתוך ניסיון להתאים את האמונה באלים לאמונה באל אחד? עיון בתולדותיהן של שלוש מסורות מקראיות - 'בני אלים', האל רשף, האל בית-אל - מקרב זאת אל הדעת, והמוצא האלילי של האמונה במלאכים מסביר מדוע אסכולות חשובות בישראל. מחברי ספר דברים וספר כוהנים, נוקטים שתיקה רועמת לגבי פעולתם של מלאכים. קהלת והצדוקים אחריו ירשו את השקפות האסכולות הללו ושללו את קיומם של מלאכי שמים.

כתב היד של ספר ראשית חכמה , המתפרסם כאן לראשונה במלואו, הוא אחד משלושה כתבי יד העוסקים בגנותה של החסידות ממחברים עלומי שם שהגיעו לספרייה הלאומית בירושלים משרידי ארכיונו של יוסף פרל (1773–1839), איש טרנופול שבגליציה. על פי עדויות שונות, היו גנוזים בארכיון פרל בטרנופול עוד עשרות כתבי יד בעלי אופי דומה, אך הם ירדו לטמיון במחצית הראשונה של המאה העשרים, תחילה בשל הזנחת הספרייה ומאוחר יותר עקב מאורעות השואה. היקף החיבור 34 דפים כתובים בצפיפות ובכתיבה נקייה, וכאמור בשום מקום לא נרשם שם המחבר או המעתיק. כתב היד, שהמהדירים כינוהו 'ראשית חכמה', נעתק 'בשנת רצון וברכה לאלף הששי', היא שנת תקע"ט (1819), וניכרת בו המסורת של ספרות הפולמוס האנטי-חסידית, ברוח ההשכלה המתונה, המתגדרת בלשון תוכחתית בהגנתה המוצהרת על סמכותה של היהדות התורנית מפני פגיעתם הרעה של החסידים. זמן חיבורו מקביל לימי פרסומו של ספר 'מגלה טמירין' (וינה 1819) מאת יוסף פרל, אך הוא שונה בצביונו ובתכליתו המוצהרת מן היצירה בעלת המוניטין. החיבור שלפנינו מתייחד בשני עניינים מרכזיים: בביקורת תקיפה ומפורטת על ספר 'שבחי הבעש"ט' (קאפוסט תקע"ה), שהיא מהביקורות המפורטות הראשונות על הספר, ובדברים נחרצים בשבח החכמה והמלאכה, המקדימים בכמה שנים את חזונו של יצחק בער לוינזון בספרו 'תעודה בישראל' (וילנה והורדנה תקפ"ח). עוד בשנת תשמ"ח הכריז פרופ' שמואל ורסס על רצונו לפרסם את כתב היד של 'ראשית חכמה', ובתקופה זו אף התקין העתקה של החיבור וצירף לה מאות הפניות למקורות מקראיים ותלמודיים. בשנת תשס"ח קיבל פרופ' יונתן מאיר לידיו את החומר שערך ורסס כדי להשלימו ולהתקינו לדפוס, והוסיף הערות מבארות, הפניות לספרות שממנה ניזון המחבר וציונים לספרות אנטי-חסידית שהובעו בה טענות קרובות לאלה שב'ראשית חכמה', ובראש ובראשונה לספרי יוסף פרל. את המבוא חיבר ורסס בשלהי שנת תשס"ט, ומאיר הוסיף על דבריו הערות שוליים. שמואל ורסס הלך לעולמו בשעת התקנת הספר לדפוס ולא זכה לראות את המלאכה גמורה. יהא ספר זה זיכרון לפעולתו המבורכת ורבת השנים בחשיפת גנזי יוסף פרל ובחקר ספרות ההשכלה על גווניה השונים.

בספר התגלות ותיקון נחשפות ונידונות התגלויות והתנסויות רוחניות שעבר ר' נחמן מברסלב. במסגרת זו מובא, בחלק הראשון, סיפור ההתגלות רב העוצמה המכונה 'המעשה מהלחם' שנשמר בסוד בכתבי יד אזוטריים בשל אזהרתו של ר' נחמן שלא לגלותו לזר. להתגלות המתוארת במעשה מהלחם הייתה השפעה מכוננת על תודעתו העצמית של ר' נחמן כצדיק לדורות וכבעל תפקיד מכריע בתהליך המשיחי. חלקו השני של הספר מוקדש לבירור עניינם ותהליך התגבשותם של התיקונים והריטואליים שר' נחמן ייסד, כגון התיקון הכללי, התיקון למקרה לילה והתיקון הנעשה בעלייה על קברו. בהקשר זה מובא הסיפור הסודי 'המעשה מהשריון' העוסק בייחודו של התיקון שייסד ר' נחמן. בספר אף מתבררים הקשרים בין הניסיונות האישיים שר' נחמן עבר בהצלחה ובין התיקונים שייסד, ואף כאן נעשה שימוש במסורות ברסלביות סודיות, המספרות על הפיתויים שר' נחמן התמודד עמם עוד בהיותו חתן צעיר ועמד בהם כיוסף בשעתו. הספר דן גם בבחירתו של ר' נחמן בעיר אומן כמקום מנוחתו וכמקום שבו יתקיים התיקון המתקיים בעלייה על קברו. הפרק החותם את הספר דן בהתפתחויות שחלו בתיקוני ר' נחמן לאחר פטירתו ובמיוחד בעשור האחרון. בין השאר מתוארים בו ריטואליים חדשים שנוצרו במסגרת העלייה לקברו של ר' נחמן, כגון 'התיקון הכללי העולמי' והשלכת הפירסינג בעת אמירת התשליך. כמו כן מתברר ההקשר החדש שנותנים חסידי ברסלב לתופעת העלייה לרגל לקבר באומן בראש השנה בעידן שבו ר' נחמן מברסלב הוא גיבור תרבות ישראלי התופס מקום חשוב בעולמם של אנשים רבים שאינם חסידי ברסלב מסורתיים.

The corpus of Jewish mystical writings has developed over thousands of years in different parts of the world. Its creators sought to discover hidden realms that would shed light on existing reality. The literature they created, one of the central sources of inspiration of religious thought, comprises hundreds of volumes. This masterly investigation of the Jewish mystical phenomenon, from antiquity to the twentieth century, contextualizes it in the spiritual and historical circumstances in which it evolved. Mysticism, which transcends the boundaries of time and space and refers to a reality not grasped by means of ordinary human cognition, is one of the central sources of inspiration of religious thought. It is an attempt to decode the mystery of divine existence by penetrating to the depths of consciousness through language, memory, myth, and symbolism. Delving deep into the psyche, mystics strive to redeem perceived reality from its immediate meaning. Mystical texts constitute a history of this religious creativity, of man’s attempt to reveal the divine structure underlying the chaos of reality and thereby endow life with hope and purpose. By offering an alternative perspective on the world that gives expression to yearnings for freedom and change, mysticism engenders new modes of authority and leadership; as such it plays a decisive role in moulding religious and social history. For all these reasons, the mystical corpus deserves study and discussion in the framework of cultural criticism and research. This study is a lyrical exposition of the Jewish mystical phenomenon. It is based on a close reading of the hundreds of volumes written by Jewish mystics and incorporates mystical testimonies drawn from the different countries and cultural environments in which Jews have lived. Rachel Elior’s purpose is to present, as accurately as possible, the meanings of the mystical works as they were perceived by their creators and readers. At the same time, she contextualizes them within the boundaries of the religion, culture, language, and spiritual and historical circumstances in which the destiny of the Jewish people has evolved.. The author succeeds in drawing the reader into a mystical world. With great intensity, she conveys the richness of the mystical experience in discovering the infinity of meaning embedded in the sacred text; teasing out the recurring themes, she explains the multivalent symbols. Using copious extracts from Jewish mystical sources, she illustrates the varieties of the mystical experience from antiquity to the twentieth century. She succeeds in eloquently conveying how mystics try to decipher reality by penetrating beyond its apparent boundaries: how they experience spiritual powers symbolically, imaginatively, or visually; how hidden truths are revealed in visions or dreams, in an epiphany or as ‘lightning’; how they are ‘engraved’ in the mind or illuminate in the soul. Most of the texts she draws on are written in very obscure language, but the skilful translations communicate the mystical experiences vividly and make it easy for the reader to understand how Elior uses them to explain the relationship between the revealed world and the hidden world and between the mystical world and the traditional religious world, with all the social and religious tensions this has caused.

The conflict between Haskalah and hasidism was one of the most important forces in shaping the world of Polish Jewry for almost two centuries, but our understanding of it has long been dominated by theories based on stereotypes rather than detailed analysis of the available sources. In this award-winning study, Marcin Wodzinski challenges the long-established theories about the conflict by contextualizing it, principally in the Kingdom of Poland but also with regard to other parts of eastern Europe. Covering the period from the earliest anti-hasidic polemics in the late eighteenth century through to the post-Haskalah movements of the twentieth century, it follows the development of this important conflict in its central arena. Using source materials (including many hitherto unknown documents) in Polish and five other languages, Wodzinski has succeeded in reconstructing the way the conflict expressed itself. Identifying the motives, the methods, and the consequences of the conflict as it was played out in five Polish towns (Lódz, Opoczno, Piotrków, Warsaw, and Warta), he shows that it was primarily informed by non-ideological clashes at the level of local communities rather than by high-level ideological debates. Much attention is also devoted to the general characteristics of hasidism and the Haskalah, as well as to the post-Haskalah movements. Here too Wodzinski challenges the ideologically charged assumptions of a generation of historians who refused to see the advocates of Jewish modernity in nineteenth-century Poland as an integral part of the Haskalah movement. Extensive consideration is given to the professional, social, institutional, and ideological characteristics of the Polish Haskalah as well as to its geographic extent, and to the changes the movement underwent in the course of the nineteenth century. Similar attention is given to the influence of the specific characteristics of Polish hasidism on the shape of the conflict, especially as regard the size of the movement and the evolution of hasidic communal involvement. In consequence the book presents a synthesis that offers both breadth and depth, contextualizing its subject matter within the broader domains of the European Enlightenment and Polish culture, hasidism and rabbinic culture, tsarist policy and Polish history, not to mention the ins and outs of the Haskalah itself across Europe. An extensive appendix presents translations of nineteen important and hitherto unknown sources of relevance to a nuanced understanding of many aspects of nineteenth-century Jewish history in Poland and eastern Europe more generally.
