The diversity in subject of the articles assembled in the present volume needs no apology. Five departments of the Hebrew University are represented: Romance Philology, English, European History, Classics and Philosophy. Each one of them, in Jerusalem no less than at any other place, is in it own right a member of the universitas literarum. Yet perhaps the Hebrew student of Western subjects, more often than a scholar of different nationality, feels impelled to engage in inquires extending beyond the frontiers of a single country or period.
