Benjamin Kedar of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Peter Herde of Würzburg University are medievalists who deal also with issues of recent history. Herde, a leading expert on the medieval empire and papacy, examined the events that led to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and studied various facets of World War II in the Pacific theater as well as the careers of German historians before and after 1945. Kedar, a student of merchants’ mentality and Christian-Muslim relations in medieval times, has demonstrated that a series of aerial photographs of the same site, shot on different dates, constitutes a promising, objective source for many of the changes that took place in Palestine/Israel during the 20th century.
