David Dean Shulman is an Indologist and regarded as one of the world’s foremost authorities on the languages of India. His research embraces many fields, including the history of religion in South India, Indian poetics, Tamil Islam, Dravidian linguistics, and Carnatic music. Now Professor emeritus at the Hebrew University, he continues to teach Sanskrit, Tamil, and Telugu and courses on South Asian civilization. He visited India for the first time in 1972, and since then reports that cannot live without her. He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1988 and a winner of the Israel Prize in 2016.
