The book intends to present the application of a theory – psychoanalytic/psychodynamic self-psychology - for the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). It presents both the theory of self-psychology and its specific application for the understanding of the etiology and treatment of eating disorders (ED). The theory is illustrated using 12 case studies, each of which exemplifies specific theoretical, clinical, and technical principles of the approach. Together, the 12 case studies form a cohesive whole which enables the reader to follow in detail an entire process of therapy, illustrating the technique and its roots in self-psychology theory. The book provides the evidence basis for the efficacy of this treatment of eating disorders and the empirical capability of the theory to predict the development of eating disorders as well as remission from EDs.
