Eliezer Samson Rosenthal (1915-1980) was born in Germany. After immigrating to Eretz Israel in 1934 he studied at the Merkaz HaRav yeshiva and later was the religious kibbutz rabbi at the Rabbinate. His ruling on halakhot concerning Eretz Israel and the renewing settlement led him to academic studies. In 1946 he began studying at the Hebrew University. He studied Talmud, classical studies and Jewish law, and later also middle Persian.
