Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, was also a masterful painter, and his unique handprint is evident both in his writings and in his paintings. His work is characterized by lyrical and modernist prose, sometimes fantastical, and more than once he is mentioned in the same breath as Franz Kafka. His two books, "Cinnamon Shops" and "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass", were published in Poland in the 1930s, and in two Hebrew translations. Schultz was murdered by a Nazi officer in the ghetto of his hometown, Drohovich. His character and work continue to inspire to this day, among others in the book "See Under: LOVE" by David Grossman and "The Legend of Bruno and Adele" by Amir Gutfreund, as well as in works by Cynthia Ozick, Jonathan Safran Feuer and Nicole Krauss.
