Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a
senior official in the government of the Republic of Florence,
ambassador, humanist, poet, political philosopher, military theorist
and the commander of the Florentine Militia. Best known today as the author of
the outrageous 'Prince', he also composed poems, short songs, a novella, a book
on the art of war, and an extensive treatise surveying the history of
Florence.
