בדורות קדומים עוטרו תפילות בית הכנסת בכל קהילות ישראל בפיוטים רבים, הן במועדים והן בשבתות רבות במשך השנה. כתבי היד משמרים אלפי פיוטים שרק מקצתם ידועים היום, וחלקם לא נדפס עד ימינו. בספר זה נאספו למעלה ממאתיים פיוטים אותם נהגו בני מנהגי אשכנז וצפון צרפת לומר בשבת חתן ובשבת שאירעה בה ברית מילה. עשרות פייטנים כתבו פיוטים למאורעות חגיגיים אלה. רוב הפיוטים נכתבו בידי פייטנים שהיו בני אשכנז וצרפת (בין המאה האחת עשרה והמאה הארבע עשרה), אך יש ביניהם גם פיוטים שמקורם בארץ ישראל, באיטליה ובספרד. חלק מהיצירות נכתבו לרגל השמחות המשפחתיות של הפייטנים עצמם. מלבד הסוגים הנפוצים של הפיוט האשכנזי (יוצר, אופן וזולת), מיוצגים באוסף שלפנינו סוגי פיוט רבים שאינם רגילים (מקצתם על פי דוגמאות מפיוטי ספרד) – ניכר שבשבתות שיש בהן שמחות משפחתיות רצו פייטני אשכנז וצרפת לשלב פיוטים במקומות רבים ומגוונים בסדר התפילה. ביחוד ניכרת חטיבה גדולה של פיוטים שנאמרו סביב עליית החתן לתורה בשבת חתן: פיוטי רשות לעליית החתן ולעליות השושבינים, שירים לחתן לאחר עלייתו לתורה, פיוטים סביב קריאת פסוקי פרשת ‘ואברהם זקן’ (קריאה שנוהגת בימינו לכבוד החתן בבתי כנסת של עדות המזרח, ונהגה לפנים גם באשכנז), ופיוטי ‘מי שבירך’. כמה פיוטים נכתבו בארמית. לספר צורפו גם פיוטים שנהגו לאומרם (לאו דווקא בשבת) סביב טקסי החתונה וברית המילה עצמם, וכן פיוטים שיועדו לברכת המזון של הסעודות החגיגיות שנערכו לכבוד הנישואין וברית המילה. פייטני אשכנז היו תלמידי חכמים מובהקים, והם שילבו בפיוטיהם בהרחבה גדולה דברי אגדה מספרות התלמוד והמדרש. את כינוס פיוטי שבתות השנה של קהילות אשכנז וצרפת התחיל פרופ’ יונה פרנקל זכרונו לברכה, כהמשך למהדורת מחזור אשכנז לשלושת הרגלים שהוציא לאור ולמחזורי ד”ר דניאל גולדשמידט לימים הנוראים. הכרך של פיוטי שבת חתן ושבת ברית מילה הוא הראשון בסדרה המיועדת להוציא לאור את פיוטי כל שבתות השנה שנהגו בארצות אשכנז ובצרפת. חוקר הפיוט ד”ר גבריאל וסרמן השלים את עבודת המחקר של כרך זה, הכוללת איסוף של שינויי נוסח מעשרות רבות של כתבי יד וכתיבת ביאור מפורט לפיוטים. לספר צורף גם מבוא גדול, הסוקר בין היתר את כל הפיוטים לסוגיהם, ועוקב אחר התפתחות מנהגי אמירתם בקהילות השונות במשך הדורות. אברהם פרנקל הוסיף למבוא תיאור של מנהגי החתונה וברית המילה באשכנז ובצרפת, זאת על פי ספרות המנהגים ועל פי סידורי קהילות אשכנז וצרפת.

Rav Kook’s theological positions have moulded the attitudes and beliefs of generations of religious Zionists. Newly published writings reveal his innovative approaches to such key topics as non-Jewish religions, morality, heresy, and animal sacrifice. Lucidly presented here, these ideas will foment much discussion and shape new ideological directions among Rav Kook’s followers. Rav Kook (1865–1935), the first chief rabbi of pre-state Israel, was a revered thinker whose ideas were in the vanguard of religious Zionist ideology. His theological positions have continued to mould the attitudes and beliefs of successive generations. Newly published writings, however, reveal ideas that have not yet entered mainstream consciousness. Marc Shapiro has grappled with the complexity of the language of these difficult Hebrew texts and identified themes he sees as of critical importance for modern Jewish Orthodoxy. His study will be welcomed as an attempt to make these teachings more broadly accessible despite the complexity of Kook’s exposition. A key development in Kook’s thinking is that he points to the religious significance of non-Jewish religions, and even raises the possibility that non-Jews may also have experienced their own religious revelations. This is a major departure from the traditional rabbinic approach. Another innovative concept is "valorization of the masses," a view that recognizes that basic morality has been preserved in a purer form among the uneducated pious masses than among learned scholars. He similarly reconsiders the nature of heresy and dogma and develops the idea of the "unintentional heretic," a category that could be said to include many in the modern world who are no longer tied to traditional religious understandings. Perhaps most controversially for Orthodox Jewish circles, he also presents an innovative understanding of the animal sacrifice of Temple ritual that allows for its abolition in messianic times. Taken together, these ideas will reverberate, foment much discussion, and shape new ideological directions in the world of religious Zionism.

With the social and cultural upheavals of early modern Europe, rabbis were constantly struggling to preserve Jewish tradition. Hakham Tsevi Ashkenazi (1658—1718), the independent-minded chief rabbi of Amsterdam, came to be regarded as one of the leading halakhic authorities of this tumultuous era. The battles he waged changed Jewish practice in his lifetime and came to define rabbinic norms in the decades that followed, with relevance to the present day. The challenges for a leading rabbi in a time of ferment were many. With advances in communication and the early stirrings of political emancipation in Jewish and secular society, how could one establish halakhic authority? How were rabbis to navigate the new reality in which mystical texts—once the exclusive province of the elite—became accessible to the masses? As geographical boundaries shifted and cultural barriers crumbled, how could one build a bridge between the worlds of Ashkenaz and Sepharad? How were the keepers of tradition meant to respond to the religious laxity that accompanied acculturation? And how could the religious establishment engage sectarians in general, and crypto-Sabbatians in particular? Hakham Tsevi didn’t always win the battles he fought, but his arguments have endured. Products of his fierce independence, some of his responsa have attained near-canonical status., Today’s halakhic discussions of such contemporary issues as brain death and artificial intelligence often begin with the words he committed to posterity. Hundreds of years after his death, Hakham Tsevi and his work remain at the frontier of halakhic discourse.

This volume of Hispania Judaica Bulletin presents the first collection of studies dedicated to the impact of the Iberian converso crisis on the interpretation of Paul’s life and teachings. We believe this to have been a significant historical phenomenon—one which we may call Converso Paulinisms. By way of introduction, we briefly present the main developments from which this concept derives its rationale and the productive end we hope it can serve. We begin with the lessons we learned from recent developments in Pauline studies and the readings of Paul by Church authorities, theologians, and contemporary thinkers. Then, we move on to consider their implications in Late Medieval and Early Modern setting of the converso phenomenon.

ר’ אלעזר בירבי קליר (‘הקליר’ בפי העם) הוא המפורסם והפורה שבין משוררינו בתקופת השיא של הפיוט הקדום העברי בארץ ישראל – בין המאה השישית למאה השמינית לספירה. חלק מאלפי הפיוטים שכתב השתמר במחזורי אשכנז, צרפת ואיטליה, ומקצת מיצירותיו נאמרות בבתי הכנסת עד היום. ממצאי גניזות קהיר מלמדים שבמחזורים האירופיים לא נשתמרו אלא מקצת מיצירותיו של הקלירי. מתברר שהוא עיטר בכמה סדרות של פיוטים – ובעיקר בקדושתאות, הן מערכות הפיוטים לתפילות העמידה המתרחבות לקראת הקדושה – כל אחת מתפילות היום, וכתב שוב ושוב יצירות חדשות שבאו להחליף את קודמותיהן. בצד קדושתאותיו למוסף ולנעילה שבדפוסי אשכנז, התגלו בגניזה קדושתאות מקבילות לתפילות אלה, וכן פיוטים לערבית, לשחרית ולמנחה. כמו כן התברר שהקדושתאות שבמחזורי אשכנז השתבשו, חלק מהקטעים המקוריים שהיו בהן הושמטו, ונוספו בהן קטעים מאוחרים. בספר שלפנינו מרוכזים כל הפיוטים ששרדו ממורשתו של ר’ אלעזר בירבי קליר לכל התפילות, תוך ניסיון לשחזר את הקומפוזיציות השלמות מתוך קטעי הגניזה, כמובן גם בעזרת החומר שבמחזורים האירופיים. הפיוטים מודפסים באופן המבליט את תבניותיהם השיריות, והם מנוקדים ומלווים בביאור מקיף. בצד כל פיוט מפורטים, במדור נפרד, גם שינויי נוסחיו על פי מקורותיו שבידינו. שחזור הקדושתאות העלה שאלות רבות, ואלו נדונות בפירוט במבוא מקיף. הדיון כולל בירור ממצה של הרכבה של כל קומפוזיציה, של ייעודה המדויק ושל שאלת ייחוסו לקלירי של כל קטע, גם מסוגי פיוט אחרים. במבוא מתוארות גם תבניות הפיוטים לסוגיהם, סגולותיהם השיריות, לשונם הייחודית, תוכניהם וכן מסורות מדרש ייחודיות וענייני הלכה ומנהג המופיעים בהם. בספר מופיעים קטעי שיר רבים מאוד שטרם נדפסו במהדורה מדעית מתוקנת.

Beautiful large-size edition This exhaustive history of Provençal Jewry examines the key aspects of Jewish life in Provence—cultural, religious, political, economic, and literary—over some 1,500 years. The Jewish response to the Albigensian Crusade, the annexation of Languedoc by the Kingdom of France, and other historical events was an unprecedented cultural florescence that was to have far-reaching and enduring consequences. Crucially, it was in Provence that philosophical and scientific works were first translated from Arabic to Hebrew, allowing the Jews of Christian Europe to absorb and assimilate the achievements of the Jews of Muslim Spain. The emergence in Provence of the Maimonidean-Aristotelian philosophical school sent spiritual shock waves throughout the Jewish world, and it was also in Provence that the first esoteric teachings of kabbalah emerged. But cultural innovations went beyond the religious and philosophical: secular Hebrew poetry written by Jewish troubadors offered a glimpse of Jewish merrymaking, romanticism, and eroticism that drew criticism from the rabbis, and even allowed women’s voices to be assertively raised in the public sphere. First published in Hebrew in 2017 to scholarly acclaim, this is a seminal examination of the crucial role of the Jews of Provence in shaping medieval Jewish culture in the Mediterranean basin.

Although Jews were at the centre of commercial activity in medieval Europe, a talmudic ban on any wine touched by a Gentile prevented them from engaging in the lucrative wine trade. Wine was consumed in vast quantities in the Middle Ages, and the banks of the Rhineland hosted some of the finest vineyards in northern Europe. German Jews were, until the thirteenth century, a merchant class. How could they abstain from trading in one of the region’s major commodities? In time, they ruled that it was permissible to accept wine in payment of debt, but forbade trading in it, and they maintained that ban throughout the Middle Ages. Further study in the twelfth century, however, led Talmudists to discover that Jews were only forbidden to profit from trading in Gentile wine if they dealt with idolaters, but that trade with Christians and Muslims was permitted. Nevertheless, the German community refused to take advantage of this clear licence. Using Jewish and Gentile sources, this study probes the sources of this powerful taboo. In describing the complex ways in which deeply held cultural values affect Jews’ engagement in the economy of the surrounding society, this book also illustrates the law of unintended consequences—how the ban on Gentile wine led both to a major Jewish contribution to German viticulture and to the involvement of Jews in moneylending, with all its tragic consequences. *** The second chapter is intended for those familiar with the eleventh-century halakha in Ashkenaz.
