The book deals with the formative years of Israel's evolving symbolic landscape. The research covers the story of a few dozen Jews who passed away in the Diaspora and later their remains were taken to be buried for the second time (and sometimes for the third) in Israel. These were Zionists and politicians, writers and poets, heroes and public activists whose common denominator was that they all passed away in the Diaspora, far and detached from the national homeland that they fought for before their tragic death. Only later, in an act of repair, their coffins were sent to be buried in the "sacred" Zionist soil, in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Dgania. These graves became pilgrimage sites and contributed to the design of Israel's symbolic landscape. The book was published in English in cooperation with De Gruyter Oldenbourg and can be found here .

This volume includes nine articles based on documents from the North- African collection of the Division of religion at Yale University. The annotated texts are edited and detailed discussions of issues arising from the documents are listed . Four documents from North- African countries are represented. This volume offers twelve studies based on lectures delivered by participants of the workshop. These studies deal with culture and history, customs and traditions from all North African Jewish communities. The didactic emphasis on Nietzsche's presence in the life and work of Yoseph Hayim Brenner in unprecedented scope and depth aims to stress Brenner's Hebraism. What has been his utmost concern is the typical existentialist question, free of any national boundaries and religions: "Who is a Man? Brenner is the most important modern Hebrew writer who wished to create his own personal authenticity. He did not believe that secularization will lead to disintegration or to assimilation but to the creation of a new type of an authentic Hebrew, who will be able to write for himself, mainly by his own resources, his own unique book of life. Brennner's 'secret sweetness' is nurtured by three central 'burning fires' (as is the Yiddish meaning of his name): 1. His personal and immediate direct relation to God of Abraham, Yitzhak and Yaacov, and not to the rabbinical rites and lore. 2. His burning desire to foster a vibrant modern Hebrew literature. 3. His longing for a genuine authentic Mensch that will replace the unattainable Nietzschean ideal of the Übermensch. Hence one of the main tenets of this research is that we cannot explain or understand Brenner solely by using the Nietzschean prism. Brenner's ultimate effort to write in a half-dead language (Hebrew) to a half-alive people (the Jewish people) is his "why of life" that helped him accept almost "any how". Brenner used Nietzsche to overcome his attraction to prevalent political-cultural ideologies that ended with an 'ism', such as communism, socialism, anarchism, or Bundism. Thus he used Nietzsche in a Nietzschean way to overcome his initially strong attachment to the "Herald of Zarathustra" (the fictive literary personification of the authentic hero). Brenner gladly embraced Zarathustra's bid to his pupils: "Now I bid you lose me and find yourselves; and only when you have all denied me will I return to you".

The book focuses on the deviant behaviors of troubled Israeli youth, including juvenile delinquents, their accounts for their behaviors, and the steps taken by the agencies responsible for their treatment. The articles were written by experts in the various fields and academics who have an intimate familiarity with the reality of the subjects about which they write.

In the ongoing flood of studies of memory in its manifold forms and meanings, the no less powerful subject of forgetting tends to be forgotten. We often think of forgetting as a passive process, something that simply “happens” to us and to other living beings; but many of the studies in this inter-disciplinary volume reveal the active and even creative nature of forgetting, its positive features, and its varied roles in a wide series of cultural and intercultural templates. Neuroscientists joined with historians, philologists, a linguist, philosophers, sociologists and anthropologists, an archaeologist and an artist in the two joint workshops that generated this volume, under the auspices of the Zukunftskolleg at the University of Konstanz and the Martin Buber Society of Fellows at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The lively exchanges in the workshops are reflected in the comments and discussion that follow many of these experimental, meditative essays.

Yaron Harel has constructed a dramatic story of how eleven chief rabbis all became the subject of controversy and were subsequently dismissed. This took place against a background of crime and licentiousness rarely documented in the context of Jewish society. Set firmly in the social and political developments of the time, this colourful picture is very different from the commonly accepted image of Jewish communities in the Ottoman Empire. This is a book of unexpected drama: all eleven chief rabbis appointed in this period of unprecedented change in the Jewish communities of the Fertile Crescent became the subject of controversy and were subsequently dismissed. This took place against a background of events rarely discussed in the context of Jewish society: crime, hooliganism, slander, power struggles, sexual promiscuity, and even assaults and assassination attempts on rabbis. Using a wide range of testimonies gleaned from Ottoman Jewish, Arabic, and European sources, Yaron Harel paints a colourful picture of these upheavals set firmly in the social and political context of the time and far removed from the commonly accepted image of Jewish communities in the Ottoman empire. Jews were also affected by modernization and political conflict in the wider society of the time, and these too gave rise to power struggles. The chief rabbis were at the forefront of these confrontations, especially those that resulted from the new inclination towards Western culture. Most of them recognized that the challenges of modernization had to be met, although in a way that did not endanger religious principles. Their openness to change stemmed from a concern for the future of the communities for which they were responsible, but they were often vociferously opposed by those who were free from such responsibility. The communal politics that ensued were sometimes heated to the point of violence. In the latter years of the empire, many Jews came to support the Young Turks, with their promise of liberty and equality for all. The atmosphere of the time was such that rabbis had to develop political awareness and engage in Ottoman politics. This was another source of tension within the community since the new regime punished anyone suspected of opposition severely. This lively and fascinating study based on little-known sources offers a lens through which to view the Jewish society of the Ottoman empire at a time when all the traditional norms were being challenged.

Among the masses of immigrants that turned New York into the largest Jewish city in the world in the early twentieth century , grew a spectacular Yiddish culture - journalism, theater and literature. Dozens of artists designed varied life experiences linking the Old World to their new country. It was a one-time, one of a kind fusion between 'East' - Jewish Eastern Europe - and the 'West' - the vastness of the United States, and especially the dizzying life of a big city. The chapters in "Here Dwells the Jewish People: A Century of American Yiddish Literature" are connected to each other. They describe a rich and complex array that functioned for three generations and more, and went through major changes: from poetry brimming with emotion and pathos and the melodramatic plays written by the first generation immigrants, literature ascended to the modernist writings of Moshe Leib Halpern, A. Liles, Jacob Glatstein, Anna Margolin and the dazzlingly rich prose of Yitzhak Bashevis.

The four volume series of the History of the Hebrew University Project is devoted to the development of the idea and of its implementation during the pre-state period. The previous three volumes expanded in a great number of scholarly articles on the complex stories which made up this history from a great variety of aspects – scientific and academic, political and organizational, economic and social. The present volume, the last part of the project, seeks to focus on the individuals, the personalities of the people who made the university become a reality; those who struggled for its foundation, and the pioneering scholars and scientists who laid the basis and shaped the Hebrew University. It opens a window for the wider public to become familiar with the story of the Hebrew University without the need to penetrate into the complexity of scientific and other issues dealt with in previous volumes. The story of the university is the story of the enormous efforts involved in bringing prominent scholars and scientists to Eretz Israel, then a remote and marginal corner in the Middle East. These efforts were accompanied with debates of principle and personal controversies within and outside of the university about academic and national considerations. Despite all difficulties, criticisms and doubts, the founders of the university succeeded in building an institution of intellectual excellence that would become a pillar in the project of Jewish national renaissance and prepared the basis for the Hebrew University academic leadership in Israel and in the Jewish world for many years to come.

He desired the wife of the warlord Amphitruo who left the city to fight in a war. Jupiter takes Amphitruos' shape and makes love to his wife. When Amphitruo comes back from battle then starts a comedy of mistakes which ends in Amphitruos' wife giving birth to two sons - one for each man.
