This book is concerned with the exploration of the concept of human dignity, which is taken as the ultimate basis of the entitlement of man to his special position in the inter-human context, and also as what can be described as the metaphysical orbit. The thesis of the book is that the concept is so eclectic that it is mandatory to explore its various components: man and morality, and the attribution of sanctity to human life. The method pursued explores these various aspects by analyzing the most prominent expressions of the various views of philosophers, and adding critical comments to the analysis.

Presented here is a collection of songs, complete with the music, the words in Yiddish and in transliteration into Latin characters, and translations or summaries in English and Hebrew. A comprehensive and lyrical introduction by Abba Kovner, opens the Anthology. Kovner traces the sources of Yiddish song, recreates the pre-war East European Jewish world in which the songs are rooted, and fuses memory with history to make the material live.

Beginning with the exploration of the problem of secularization and the role of modern science in seventeenth century Europe, Michael Heyd focuses in on a specific case study: the examination of the diffusion of Cartesian science and its relationship with the secularization of society in the context of a particular educational institution - the Academy of Geneva between the period of Orthodoxy and the beginning of the Enlightenment.

A digital version of this book is available here This volume presents a small selection of publications by the late Professor Michael Avi–Yonah, some of which are out of print or otherwise difficult to obtain. The articles chosen from Avi -Yonah's more than 400 publications deal with various aspects of art in ancient Palestine, a subject with which Avi-Yonah was much concerned throughout his life. One of the problems that occupied a central place in his studies was the effect of the meeting of occidental and oriental cultures after the conquest of the East by Hellenism, and this interest is reflected in the first group of publications collected here. Others deal with specific objects (e.g., the Leda sarcophagus) or present the whole range of artistic expression in one medium, as recovered from the past through archaeology (e.g; mosaic pavements.) Also included are three articles (in French) on certain problems concerning mosaic pavements, in particular those of synagogues; up to now it has been difficult to obtain these, as they are based on lectures given at international congresses. A number of illustrations which will appeal to the reader has been added to the plates of photographs published with the original articles and a general index appended.
