Ami Shamir was born in Poland and came to mandatory Palestine as a child. In world war II he served in the Jewish Brigade, and joining the IDF with the outbreak of the War of Independence he was appointed Education officer, serving later on the editorial board of “Bamahane”, where he started his journalistic career. Moving on to the civilian press, he worked, inter alia, in “Davar”, “Lamerhav” and “Haaretz”. Turning later full time to literary work, he translated into Hebrew and edited more than a hundred volumes. “Air Time” is his third book, preceded by “Shoes from Eretz Israel” – a novel about Jewish youth in Poland between world wars – and “Inside Pages” – a selection of articles and features, some of them prize-winning, from his journalistic period.
